The Culture of Feminisation and the Rise of Woke

First woke: The emergence of "wokeness" is not a sudden, inexplicable ideological shift, but rather the predictable outcome of a profound demographic transition within our most vital institutions. When you saturate organisations: law, human resources, academia, and the media, with a critical mass of individuals whose social signalling prioritises empathy, safety, and consensus, the operating logic of those institutions undergoes a fundamental metamorphosis. This is not about individual competence; it is about the systemic replacement of masculine principles, which adopt hierarchy, adversarial debate, and the pursuit of objective truth, with feminine patterns of behaviour that emphasize social cohesion, emotional safety, and the ostracization of those who disrupt the group's harmony.

In a healthy, functioning institution, the primary directive is the pursuit of an objective end: justice in law, discovery in science, or profit in business. These goals require a tolerance for conflict, as truth is often uncomfortable and hierarchies must be maintained to ensure competence. However, as the demographic composition of these fields has shifted, the internal incentives have moved away from these rugged pursuits. In a feminised environment, the highest social value is no longer being "right" or "effective"; it is being "safe" and "inclusive."

When the primary currency of an organisation becomes social cohesion, any individual who challenges the group's shared narrative, even in service of empirical reality, is treated as a pathogen. "Cancel culture" is the natural immune response of this environment. It is the mechanism by which the group protects itself from the "danger" of dissent. By framing disagreement as a form of harm, the institution effectively immunises its dogma from scrutiny. The result is a total collapse of the adversarial process that once kept our institutions accountable and tethered to the real world.

The tragedy of this transition is that it creates a feedback loop of institutional incompetence. Because these environments punish the very traits: courage, risk-taking, and blunt honesty, that allow for course correction, the institutions become increasingly decoupled from reality. HR departments and administrative bureaucracies become the dominant force, effectively neutering leadership.

When you replace the pursuit of excellence with the pursuit of psychological comfort, you don't just get a "nicer" environment; you get a fragile one. These institutions lose the ability to survive conflict, handle external pressure, or solve complex problems, because their internal logic is fundamentally designed to ignore anything that threatens the collective emotional state. We are witnessing the slow-motion decay of the American way of life, not because of a grand, conspiratorial plot, but because we have systematically engineered our decision-making bodies to choose the maintenance of feelings over the survival of the civilization itself.

Secondly, the question of Modern women: Men and women are not interchangeable at the group level. The differences in average personality, interests, and conflict style are large, replicable, and visible to anyone who isn't ideologically required to deny them. Women, on average, score higher on agreeableness and neuroticism. They prefer consensus, emotional safety, and relational harmony. Men, on average, tolerate more open conflict, hierarchy, and status competition, and are more willing to adopt impersonal rules or truth over feelings. These are not stereotypes invented by reactionaries; they show up in Big Five data, interest inventories, evolutionary psychology, and everyday observation of mixed-sex groups.

When an institution crosses from token female presence to majority or near-majority female staffing, especially in fields that used to run on adversarial argument, risk tolerance, and ranking by output, the operating system changes. Cancel culture is not primarily "Marxism with better PR." It is what female-typical social enforcement looks like at scale: ostracism, reputation destruction, emotional claims of harm, and pressure to choose group cohesion over open disagreement. The Larry Summers episode was an early, pure example. Rational rebuttal did not matter once enough people treated the claim itself as a personal injury.

The timing lines up too well to dismiss. Law schools, medical schools, major newsrooms, and large parts of the white-collar professional class flipped or approached parity in the 2010s. The most intense wave of institutional wokeness followed. Pure ideology explanations that ignore who is actually sitting in the rooms making the decisions are incomplete. Personnel is policy. Culture is downstream of the people who staff the culture.

This does not mean every woman is a censor or every man a free-speech absolutist. Overlap is real. It does mean that shifting the sex ratio predictably shifts the average preferences that get enforced. Institutions optimised for war, markets, or scientific contestation do not automatically stay optimised when the dominant social technology becomes relational policing and safetyism. Rule of law suffers when sympathy for the preferred party routinely overrides process. Journalism suffers when cohesion and narrative control beat awkward facts. Academia suffers when emotional harm claims veto inquiry.

The civilisational-collapse rhetoric is real, but the institutional degradation is not imaginary. Competence, open contestation, and impersonal standards are not free goods. They have to be actively maintained against the grain of certain average preferences. Pretending the demographic shift is costless, or that any critique of it is automatically bigotry, is the real PC move. Andrews is describing a selection pressure most people can see and few are allowed to name.
