Masculinity Regained: Advice for Young Men
The play is old, and it is not subtle once you see it. First a generation of boys is taught that what they are: aggression, drive, risk, the wish to build, to compete, to protect, is not a rough edge to be sanded but a disease. "Toxic masculinity" was never a description of a particular cruelty. It was a label for a category of person, and that person was you before you had done much of anything. Then the same culture that named your nature a poison sold you the anaesthetic. A phone. A controller. A browser with infinite tabs. Social media harvests attention. Games take the competitive instinct and drop it into a Skinner box. Pornography takes sexuality and returns a cheap counterfeit that leaves a man emptier and less able to do the real thing.
The boy who might have built something, led something, married someone, is given a dopamine drip and a shame he cannot name. He has been declawed and then sold a pacifier. The people who did the naming get to feel righteous. That is not a smoke-filled-room conspiracy. It is a market. A culture that resents a demographic and a set of industries that profit from that demographic's paralysis do not need a meeting. They rhyme.
Before you can resist any of it you have to say what is happening in ordinary language. Your nature is not the problem. Testosterone, competition, risk, hierarchy, the drive to become someone, those built every civilisation a sane person would want to live in. A culture that pathologises them is not protecting the vulnerable. It is making a cohort it finds inconvenient easier to manage. The escapes are not accidents you stumbled into. They are products. Teams of engineers borrowed the gambling industry's tools: variable rewards, loss aversion, streaks, near-misses, so that quitting feels like loss. You are the crop. The harvest is time and potency. Shame is the leash. You are told the instincts are evil, so you feel guilty for having them, and then you numb the guilt with the products that keep you from acting on them. That loop does not open if you simply feel worse about yourself.
What to do is unfashionable and concrete. Cut the drip. Porn is less a sermon topic than a chemical one. It trains the reward system to prefer novelty and passivity over pursuit and a living person. Quitting is not purity theatre. It is getting the wiring back so that a real woman can compete with a screen, which she cannot while the screen is winning. Gaming is not evil as a hobby. It is a sedative when ambition goes there to die because the real world feels unwinnable. Notice which one you are doing. Social media is a slot machine with a comment section. It feeds other men's highlight reels against your blooper reel, which is exactly the despair that keeps the thumb moving. Keep the tools if you must. Leave the casino.
Reclaim the body. Lift. That is not bro folklore. Strength training restores a felt sense of agency that no affirmation can. You cannot scroll your way to competence. You can earn it, one rep at a time, and the nervous system knows the difference. Sleep, sunlight, real food, hard physical work: the modern environment attacks every one of them, and every one of them is a foundation stone of a stable mind.
Build something that exists when you close the laptop. Learn a trade or a craft. For decades a degree was sold as the only path, then came the debt and a labour market that did not need you. The men who can fix, weld, wire, plumb and repair are in demand and hard to sack by committee. Practical skill is power that does not dissolve in a meeting. Finish things. A business, a table, a program, a garden, a book: anything shipped is evidence against the lie that you are useless. Lies die on contact with evidence.
Find real men. Mentorship is the opposite of the isolation the culture prefers: no father, no elders, no brothers, just you and a screen. Ask men further along. Most of them are hungry to pass something on. Build a small circle that tells the truth: not a support group, a squad: men who will call you out and who will show up.
Get a mission. Aimlessness is the soil in which every trap above grows. The man with a purpose does not need the drip; the drip fills the hole where a purpose should be. It can be a business, a family, a craft, a faith, a cause, anything that demands you become more than you are. Take responsibility for your own outcomes. That is the part the apparatus likes least, because a man who owns his results is harder to govern. You cannot be sold an escape if you have already decided to build your way out.
Refuse the frame. You do not have to accept the vocabulary. "Toxic masculinity" is a phrase meant to make you ashamed of being male. Decline it. Not by becoming a cartoon of toughness, but by refusing to negotiate with a premise that starts from your being broken. Do not outsource your worth to people who despise the category you belong to. Their approval is not a prize. Chase competence, honour, and the respect of people who have earned yours.
The culture told young men they were the problem, then sold them a cage and called it entertainment. The way out is not to win the argument with that culture. It is to stop buying what it sells. Turn off the drip. Build the body. Build the skill. Find brothers. Pick a mission. Take the wheel. Nobody is coming to rescue you. That is not a curse. A man who rescues himself is the one thing this machinery cannot manufacture, cannot merchandise, and cannot replace. Go be that.
