Climate Change Nonsense: Everywhere is Warming Faster Than Everywhere Else
Open almost any news site on a slow climate day and you will eventually encounter a headline like these:
"Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average."
"The Arctic is heating up four times faster than the rest of the planet."
"Canada is warming at twice the global rate."
"Australia is heating faster than the world average."
"Africa is warming more rapidly than the rest of the globe."
Physicist Sabine Hossenfelder recently collected a stack of these claims in a short video and pointed out the obvious problem. If every major region, continent, and many individual countries are all warming faster than the global average, something has gone wrong with arithmetic.
The global average temperature change is, by definition, the area-weighted average of temperature changes across the entire planet. It is not possible for every significant landmass or ocean basin to sit above that average at the same time. Some places must be below it, some near it, and some above it. When media outlets repeatedly declare that their region is the exceptional one, the cumulative message becomes logically incoherent.
The individual scientific papers behind many of these stories are often correct on their own narrow terms. Land surfaces generally warm faster than the ocean. High latitudes warm faster than the tropics, this is the well-established phenomenon of polar amplification. Different studies use different baselines, different time windows, or different data sets. A paper focused on the European landmass over the last 40 years can legitimately report a higher trend than the global mean for the same period. Another paper can do the same for the Arctic. A third can do it for a particular country.
The problem is selective emphasis and loss of context. Each study is framed for maximum local impact: "Our place is heating especially fast." Journalists, press officers, and advocacy groups then amplify the most dramatic comparison. Over time the public is left with the impression that the entire map is coloured in "above average."
This is the same statistical illusion that lets every parent believe their child is above average, or every city claim it has the worst traffic. When the claim is made about temperature trends for nearly every large region simultaneously, the contradiction becomes unavoidable.
What does not follow is the rhetorical habit of treating every local or regional trend as evidence that this place is uniquely imperilled relative to a mysterious "rest of the world" that somehow never includes the place in question. When the "rest of the world" keeps shrinking until it contains almost nothing, the comparison stops informing and starts misleading.
It is but one more example of climate change alarmism, gaslighting and deceiving the long-suffering public.
