In the end they have to consult a printout to try and work out the law, even though they have already assaulted and false imprisoned said bikini girl. In exchange for campus peace and to escape government bean-counters, universities by the score funded race-themed programs whose unstated purpose was to indoctrinate students into a racial ideology that has undermined both academic intellectual tolerance and broader American values. Endless cries of racism and victimhood, demands to dismantle capitalism and law-enforcement, insistence on strict ideological conformity and reparations for slavery, cancel-culture attacks on academics who reject identity politics — these are no longer at the fringes. Even science has become a form of white oppression. Anger is now a cultivated virtue, and concessions only encourage more outlandish demands. It is hardly an accident that one of the favorite words in this crusade — “woke” — harkens back to America’s Great Awakening from 1730–40, when fanatic evangelicals demanded harsh punishments for sin. Today’s “woke” views have gone mainstream; just listen to the talking heads on CNN, MSNBC, and the mass media generally, and you can hear fragments of past classroom lectures. Race is a social construct whose only purpose is to justify white racism; disagreement is “hate;” all whites enjoy privilege; no non-white can be racist. Echoes of Critical Race Theory are everywhere, even though few TV-watchers recognize the academic pedigree of this nonsense. There are no signs of these passions waning. This is not the French Revolution whose Reign of Terror ended when the available heads to decapitate ran short. The supply of imaginary white racism is limited only by the imagination. No university can even consider ending programs that provide lucrative livelihoods to throngs of middle-class blacks. These programs cannot be dismantled even though there is now a trickle of blacks in traditional fields. The Devil has joined the political and economic mainstream. The US military, not to mention corporations (Kroger wants you to pick up a dose of white guilt along with your groceries) and philanthropies with billion-dollar endowments celebrate racial preferences and condemn supposed white malevolence, even in the face of popular opposition and contrary to federal law. “I use the term “overclass” to describe this group. A similar though not identical concept is what is known, after Barbara Ehrenreich, as the “professional-managerial class” (PMC). Whatever terminology you prefer to use, generalizations about all Western elites need to be accompanied by more granular analysis at the level of each country. Referring only to the U.S., I think it is helpful to go beyond the basic distinction between the overclass and the working class and identify distinct groups within each. Only the most primitive Marxists believe that a tiny group of individual capitalists—to the manor born or self-made—controls societies from behind the scenes. The managerial elite proper consists of the functionaries of corporations, large investment banks, law firms, government agencies, both civilian and military, nonprofits, and universities. They may have professional degrees, but they are essentially organization men and organization women in centralized, hierarchical, bureaucratic entities. They are the chief beneficiaries of the neoliberal system set up in the last half century to replace the New Deal order. But the American elite includes three other groups, in addition to these bureaucratic managers. One consists of hereditary rentiers—heirs and heiresses, born into rich families. Old money types should be distinguished from tycoons like Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos, who tend to be products of upper-middle-class or modestly rich families who happened to become incredibly rich. “At a Black Lives Matter demonstration in London, a self-described mixed-race member of the LGBT community said that the concept of intersectionality means that there is “one common enemy: the white man” and therefore “we need to get rid of them”. On Sunday, Black Lives Matter protesters marched from Marble Arch in Hyde Park to Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, where speakers spoke out against systemic racism and capitalism. One of the speakers said that to understand the movement, it is important to understand the tenants of the left-wing sociological concept of “intersectionality”. “You can’t talk about education, and you can’t talk about black issues, and LGBT issues, and exclude them as if they’re some individual issue; you need to be looking at this using intersectionality,” he said in a Breitbart London exclusive video. The speaker said that intersectionality “means recognising that there is one common enemy: the white man. The systems that they use are capitalism, patriarchy, and fascism. They were created and perpetuated by white men, for white men, in the interests of white men.” He added that “once we realise that we are all fighting the same fight, it just strengthens the army. A problem shared is a problem halved. Imagine if we all realised and came together and grouped together?” “All of these groups of people, the issues they face, it all comes from the same people: white men. So we need to get rid of them,” he said, going on to suggest that — sotto voce — people should “kill the rich”.
