Opposition to an improper insertion of race into the Constitution is not the main issue, but, rather, the danger of serious political division on this continent in the middle to long term. With totalitarian China on the move, this is a life-or-death matter for the Australian nation. Also very important is the sheer lack of equity in the whole concept. Mitchell is no doubt right, however, to point out that those Aboriginal Australians behind this campaign will not "give up their aspirations" and "surrender".
