Anthony Fauci Faces Announced Investigations from Three State Attorneys General
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier launched a probe shortly after Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times during a July 29, 2026, Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing chaired by Sen. Rand Paul. Uthmeier cited Fauci's "lack of candour" and said his office would examine potential violations of Florida law related to COVID-19 claims, what Fauci knew, and any resulting harms to Floridians.
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill stated that her office is investigating Fauci and would join Alabama and Florida. She referenced prior depositions and newly emerging records.
Alabama is the third state referenced in these announcements as conducting or joining an investigation.
These are state-level investigations. Former President Biden issued a preemptive federal pardon for Fauci covering potential offenses from 2014 through January 19, 2025. Presidential pardons apply only to federal crimes, so they do not block state prosecutors.
Separately, Sen. Rand Paul has pushed for a contempt-of-Congress referral over Fauci's refusal to answer questions, with a committee discussion scheduled around 7 August 2026. No formal federal criminal charges against Fauci himself have been filed. His former senior adviser, David Morens, was previously indicted on federal records-related charges.
