While most people scroll past the headlines, go to work, and worry about groceries and housing, the world is sliding deeper into a conflict that could redefine the 21st century. Michael T. Snyder's latest Substack piece lays it out plainly: Israel, the United States, and Iran are locked in a deadly dance that is rapidly pulling the region, and potentially the globe, toward something far larger than a limited war.
This isn't "another Middle East crisis." It is the heating up of what many are calling World War III, and it is only in its early chapters. Most people still won't know what hit them until the real shocks arrive.
The Current Flashpoint
Since late February 2026, the United States and Israel have conducted major strikes on Iran under "Operation Epic Fury." These included assassinations of top Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated with missile and drone barrages across the region, hitting U.S. bases, Gulf states, and Israeli targets. A fragile ceasefire was cobbled together in April, but as of late May, fresh U.S. strikes on Iranian vessels and sites in the Strait of Hormuz have occurred even while negotiators sit in Qatar.
Israel continues intensified operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Oil markets are volatile. Global supply chains are feeling the strain. And yet, for the average person in Adelaide, London, or Chicago, it still feels distant, just more desert fireworks on the news.
Snyder and others in the alternative space argue this conflict has all the hallmarks of escalation:
Proxy Networks Activating: Iran's Axis of Resistance (Hezbollah, Houthis, Iraqi militias) is not fully defeated. A single miscalculation, a major oil tanker sinking, a strike on a critical Gulf facility, or a successful asymmetric attack, could draw in more players.
Great Power Shadows: Russia and China have interests in Iran. While neither wants full-scale war, they benefit from U.S. distraction and higher energy prices. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz (20%+ of global oil) already ripple into inflation and shortages worldwide.
Nuclear Shadow: Iran's nuclear program was a core justification for the initial strikes. Even with leadership decapitated, the knowledge and remnants remain. The risk of desperate escalation or loose materials cannot be ignored.
Domestic Distractions: Many Western populations are exhausted by years of cultural division, economic pressure, and eroded trust in institutions. When real crisis hits: energy blackouts, conscription pressures, or terror blowback, the shock will be profound.
This mirrors historical patterns before previous world wars: proxy fights, rising great power tensions, economic stress, and elite miscalculations. The difference today is the speed of modern weapons, cyber capabilities, and interconnected economies.
People (including me) will not know what hits them if:
Fuel prices double or triple
Food inflation spikes from disrupted trade
Young men (women?) start receiving conscription notices
Blackouts or cyber attacks hit civilian infrastructure
Terror incidents occur in Western cities as blowback
This conflict is not ending cleanly. Even if current talks in Qatar produce another pause, the underlying tensions, nuclear ambitions, ideological hatreds, resource competition, remain. World War III may not look like the neatly defined wars of the past. It could be a rolling series of regional explosions, economic warfare, and hybrid attacks that slowly grind down the current order.
The warning from voices like Snyder is clear: While people are distracted by bread and circuses, the old world is burning down faster than most realise. Traditional Australia is disappearing. The global stability many took for granted is following it.
Prepare where you can, materially, spiritually, and communally. Because this war is just getting started, and the full impact is still heading our way.
