For more than five years the public was told the science was settled. SARS-CoV-2 could not have come from a laboratory. The paper that sealed that verdict, The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2, was treated as definitive. Anyone who questioned it was branded a conspiracy theorist, deplatformed, or professionally punished. Government officials pointed to it. Media repeated it. Platforms enforced it.
Then Senator Rand Paul released thousands of pages of congressional material, including the transcribed interview with Dr. Ralph Baric and the private Slack archive of the Proximal Origin authors. Robert Malone's analysis of those documents does something simple and devastating: it lets the scientists speak in their own words, away from the microphones.
Baric is not a fringe figure. He is one of the world's leading coronavirus researchers, the man who pioneered reverse-genetics systems for these viruses and developed the human ACE2 mouse model that became central to the field. When he was asked about the DARPA PREEMPT solicitation and the DEFUSE proposal, he did not equivocate. The work being requested, he said, was gain-of-function. "There's no other way to think about it." Under that proposal, his own laboratory at UNC would have performed the insertion of a furin cleavage site into SARS-like bat coronaviruses. DARPA ultimately rejected the proposal. Baric also acknowledged performing other furin-related experiments in his broader program. The technical capacity and the scientific interest were real.
He further testified that he had conducted unpublished experiments showing that maximizing ACE2 binding does not necessarily improve a virus's fitness. Stronger receptor affinity can actually reduce transmission. He informed NIH of the findings and destroyed the materials, citing biosecurity concerns. That result directly undercuts one of the central arguments used in Proximal Origin to dismiss deliberate engineering. The paper told the public that if scientists had designed the virus they would have optimized ACE2 binding. Baric already knew that assumption was flawed.
The Slack messages paint an even clearer picture of the gap between private discussion and public certainty. Kristian Andersen, lead author of Proximal Origin, did not grow more confident in a natural origin over time. He moved "much more toward the middle." At points he regarded both laboratory and natural scenarios as plausible. The group continued debating tissue-culture adaptation, furin cleavage sites, host-range experiments, and Wuhan Institute work long after the paper had been elevated into official dogma. The scientific conversation never stopped. Only the public version of it did.
Baric confirmed he was present on the secret February 1, 2020 teleconference organized by Jeremy Farrar that included Fauci, Collins, Andersen, Holmes, and others. He could not clearly explain how he was invited or provide a consistent account of his participation. He also confirmed sending his NIH-funded human ACE2 mouse model to Shi Zhengli's laboratory in Wuhan, the very experimental platform designed for studying SARS-like coronaviruses that do not efficiently infect ordinary mice.
These are not interpretive leaps. They are statements from the scientists themselves, now in the congressional record. Malone's essay does not claim to have solved the origin of COVID-19 in a single stroke. It does something more important: it demonstrates that the public narrative of settled science was never an accurate reflection of the private scientific discussion. Gain-of-function coronavirus research was proposed, discussed, and in important respects performed. Key assumptions in the paper that shut down debate were already known by leading researchers to be incomplete or incorrect. Uncertainty was converted into certainty for public consumption while the actual debate continued behind closed doors.
The damage from that conversion is still with us. Trust in scientific institutions, public health agencies, and the media did not erode because ordinary people suddenly became irrational. It eroded because the gap between what was said publicly and what was known privately became impossible to ignore. The documents Paul released, and Malone's careful reading of them, make that gap visible in plain language.
The official story was always more fragile than it appeared. The people closest to the evidence knew it. Now the rest of us can see why.
