A new report championed by Left-wing economists, including Thomas Piketty, has proposed the ultimate "solution" to climate change and inequality: a global progressive income tax that would rise to a staggering 90 percent for the highest earners! This is not satire. It is presented with academic seriousness as a practical way to fund the net-zero transition, redistribute wealth worldwide, and "save the planet" while boosting living standards. If this is what it takes to avert climate catastrophe, then the planet is already too far gone to be saved by any such measure.

Biting the bullet reveals the absurdity. A 90 percent marginal tax rate on high incomes, enforced globally through some supranational mechanism, would not usher in a green utopia. It would trigger capital flight, investment collapse, innovation stagnation, and economic contraction on a scale that makes current problems look trivial. Wealthy individuals and businesses would relocate, shelter assets, or simply reduce productive activity. The revenue raised would fall far short of projections, as history has shown repeatedly with punitive tax regimes. Meanwhile, the administrative nightmare of coordinating such a tax across sovereign nations with wildly different interests would make it unenforceable without a level of global authoritarianism that makes current supranational bodies look tame.

The proposal perfectly embodies Left-wing ideology on steroids and growth hormone. It assumes that the economy is a fixed pie to be sliced and redistributed rather than a dynamic engine of creation that expands through incentives, risk-taking, and human ingenuity. It ignores that the very wealth these taxes target was largely generated by the capitalist systems the Left now seeks to punish. And it rests on the familiar apocalyptic climate narrative that demands ever more control and sacrifice from the productive while excusing inefficiency, corruption, and failed policies in the developing world.

Why It Reveals Desperation

If the only way to "save the planet" is to confiscate nearly all additional earnings from successful people worldwide, then the underlying problem, whatever one believes about climate sensitivity, is already beyond repair under current civilisational conditions. Genuine environmental challenges are better addressed through technological innovation, adaptation, nuclear power, and market-driven efficiency gains, not by turning the global economy into a penal colony for high achievers. The 90 percent tax is not serious policy. It is a tantrum dressed up as scholarship: punish success, expand government, and centralise power under the banner of planetary salvation.

This is the same mindset behind net-zero zealotry, open borders despite obvious strains, and the erosion of national sovereignty. It prioritises ideological purity and control over human flourishing and practical results. The elites pushing these ideas rarely subject themselves or their own lifestyles to the sacrifices they demand from others. Private jets for climate conferences, luxury compounds, and offshore arrangements remain strangely exempt from the rules.

The deeper truth is that modernity's demographic, cultural, and economic pressures already threaten sustainability in multiple dimensions. Attempting to solve them with confiscatory global taxation, only accelerates decline. Real solutions require radical philosophical shifts, toward pro-family policies, technological optimism, energy realism, and respect for incentives and human nature, not ever-higher taxes and global governance fantasies.

The 90 percent global income tax proposal is peak Left-wing delusion. It confirms that when progressive ideology runs out of workable ideas, it defaults to punishment and control. Fortunately, such schemes are politically and practically unworkable in any free society. They deserve to be mocked and rejected outright, not debated as serious contributions to saving anything, least of all the planet, which does not need "saving" and is doing just fine.
