For Easter: Evidence for the Resurrection of Christ is Overwhelming, By Rev. B. Barclay and Peter West

In an era where secularism often demands we check our faith at the door of the laboratory, the historical and archaeological record is beginning to tell a different story. For the believer, the Resurrection is the pivot point of human history — the moment death was defeated. For the sceptic, it is often dismissed as a pious myth.

However, as highlighted in a recent discussion between Steve Deace and scholar Jeremiah Johnston regarding the new book The Jesus Discoveries, the "shouts" of history are becoming too loud for the honest inquirer to ignore. The evidence for the Resurrection is not just found in the pews; it is buried in the dust of the Levant and etched into the oldest manuscripts known to man.

Beyond the "Leap of Faith"

Modern culture often frames Christianity as a "blind leap." But the biblical tradition, from Luke's meticulous doctoring to Paul's appeal to 500 witnesses, has always invited scrutiny. The recent wave of archaeological finds reinforces that our faith is grounded in fact, not just feeling.

As Johnston notes, we can establish approximately 65 historical facts about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus before we even open a Bible. This is a staggering level of historical certainty. To put it in perspective, we have more archaeological and manuscript evidence for the Resurrection of Christ than we do for Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon. If a historian accepts the latter, they must, by their own standards of evidence, contend with the former.

The Testimony of the Relics

The physical remnants of the first century provide a "tactile" apologetic that is difficult to dismiss.

The Roman Nail: Excavations have unearthed 6-inch square-shafted nails, specifically bent to maximise torment and minimise movement. These are not just metaphors for suffering; they are the cold, hard tools of Roman execution that match the Gospel descriptions with terrifying precision.

The "Magician's Cup": A chalice discovered in the submerged ruins of Alexandria, dating to the early first century, bears an inscription: "Through Christ the Enchanter." To a modern ear, "enchanter" sounds like a slight. To the ancient world, it was a recognition of power. Even the enemies and observers of the early church could not deny that Jesus worked miracles; they simply tried to categorise His power as "magic" rather than divinity.

The Codex Vaticanus: While sceptics claim the Bible was "rewritten" over centuries, the existence of the Codex Vaticanus (c. 330 A.D.) offers a direct window into the early church's scriptures. It shows a consistent, unwavering record of the Resurrection accounts, preserved with a reverence that defies the "evolution of myth" theory.

Why This Matters for the Conservative Heart

For the conservative Christian, these discoveries are more than just academic curiosities. They are reinforcements for the "Big Stick" of our conviction. When we speak of moral absolutes, the sanctity of life, or the foundations of Western civilisation, we do so because we believe those values are rooted in a Transcendent Truth that actually entered time and space.

In a world that feels increasingly unmoored — where "truth" is subjective and history is being erased — the stones are literally crying out. The Resurrection isn't just a story we tell our children to make them behave; it is the most well-attested event of antiquity.

As we navigate a culture that is often "unreasonably silent" or outright hostile toward the Gospel, we can walk with a quiet, humble confidence. We don't need to shout to be heard. The evidence is on our side, the history is solid, and the tomb is still empty.

The evidence isn't mounting because we want it to be true; it's mounting because Christianity is true.
